Small living room decor: start with the floor plan
Updated
To decorate a small living room, I plan before I buy: I measure the walls, decide what the room has to do (sit, watch TV, work, eat), mark the walking paths, and only then pick pieces that fit that plan. Decoration comes last, and in a small room it works better when it is concentrated on a single wall.
A note on where this applies: Curvinha is an iPhone app sold only on the Brazilian App Store, and the stores and products below are Brazilian. This guide is for you if you are furnishing a home in Brazil.
Floor plan first, store second
Before opening any website, I write down:
- The walls, corner to corner, and where the door, window, outlets and TV point are.
- What the room has to do. Just lounging? Lounging and working? Lounging and dining? Each function needs a corner.
- The walking paths. From the door to the balcony, from the door to the hallway. Furniture stays out of the main path.
- The distances between pieces: sofa to coffee table, sofa to TV, space in front of each seat. I put all of them together, with sources, in living room dimensions.
With that on paper, you already know the maximum width of the sofa, whether an armchair fits, and where the table goes.
A 15 m² living room with a home office, piece by piece
The room is 3.20 x 4.60 m (14.72 m²), with a 2.60 m ceiling height, a 1.80 m window and a TV that was already in the home. The request was a work corner without the room turning into an office. Curvinha designed it in the Brazilian contemporary style, with a budget of up to R$ 15k.

The layout trick: the sofa faces the TV and has its back to the work corner. The desk goes on the wall next to the window. The back of the sofa separates the two functions with no wall or shelf in between. One wall got terracotta paint (the Coral colour Cerâmica Mineira) and became the backdrop for video calls; the others stayed a warm off-white.

These are Brazilian stores, and most deliver only inside Brazil. Prices are in Brazilian reais (R$) on the dates shown.
That is 15 pieces from 5 stores, R$ 12,570.69 in total (prices from Oct 19, 2026). The TV, the paint and the curtain are not in that sum. Store prices change, so check the link before you buy.
Two things to notice. The whole work corner (desk, chair and light) costs from R$ 2,065.59 on Oct 19, 2026, less than the sofa. And the light comes from three points: the pendant on the ceiling, the floor lamp and the desk lamp.
Home office in a small living room
- The desk. Annex G of NBR 15575-1 uses a 0.80 x 0.60 m study desk as the minimum reference. For working all day, in the app I ask for at least 1.20 x 0.60 m. The Bali in the example is exactly that.
- The space behind the chair. For a dining table, the same Annex G asks for 0.75 m free from the table edge, to pull the chair back and stand up. I use the same measure in front of the desk, and 90 cm when someone walks behind. In the example room there is more than 1.90 m left.
- A light just for the desk. NBR ISO/CIE 8995-1 asks for at least 500 lux in an office for reading and typing. That is why the desk gets its own articulated lamp, which aims at the paper and does not reflect on the screen.
- A curtain or blind on the window, to control glare.
- The video call backdrop. Look at what shows up behind you on camera. In the example it is the terracotta wall with the large picture.
One weak point in this room: the window ended up behind and to the right of whoever is working. I prefer the window beside the desk, because light from behind reflects on the screen, and in your room I would test rotating the corner before buying.

A sofa for a small living room
The sofa is the biggest piece and sets the rest. What I look at:
- A width that keeps the path clear. Annex G uses as reference a 2-seat sofa with arms of 1.20 x 0.70 m and a 3-seat one of 1.70 x 0.70 m. In the stores there are 2-seat sofas at 1.50 m, like the Muy sofa from Tok&Stok (150 x 88 cm, from R$ 1,664.10 on Oct 19, 2026), and the Agnes sofa from Meu Móvel de Madeira (150 x 80 cm, from R$ 1,637.42 on Oct 19, 2026).
- Thin arms and visible legs. They take up less room and let you see the floor.
- Whether it gets through the door and the elevator. Compare the box size with the door before paying.
The Ôndulo in the example is 2 m long and fit because the room is 4.60 m long. In a narrower room, I would go down to 1.50 m.
Small living room with a dining table
If the living room is also the dining room, a round table usually wins: it has no corner in the way and fits one more chair when needed. Annex G uses a 4-seat round table 0.95 m across and asks for 0.75 m free around it, from the edge, which makes a circle of about 2.45 m. In the app, when I pick the table, I leave 80 cm from the edge to the wall behind each chair, and 90 cm is comfortable.
Two examples from the catalog: the round freijó and silver dining table, at Mercado Livre (99 cm across, from R$ 649.99 on Oct 19, 2026), and the Apollo round transparent dining table, from Westwing (80 cm, from R$ 824.90 on Oct 19, 2026). A glass top weighs less on the eye.
Decorating on a budget
What I do when the budget is tight:
- Spend on what you use with your body, like the sofa and the work chair. Save on objects, plants and pictures, which you can swap later.
- Paint on a single wall. It is the cheapest way to give the room personality.
- One large picture instead of several small ones. The Quwakira picture from Westwing (91 x 48 cm) is from R$ 352.90 on Oct 19, 2026.
- Keep what you already have. In another sample room in the app, 15.1 m², a proposal of up to R$ 5k that kept the sofa and the TV adds up to R$ 2,864.17 in 8 pieces (prices from Oct 19, 2026): armchair, coffee table, rug, pendant light, wall light, picture and two plants.
What it costs to furnish the rest of the home, with the same criteria, is in how much it costs to furnish an apartment in Brazil. If your style is white with light wood, the living room built that way, with what changes when it is small, is in Scandinavian decor (in Portuguese).
If a dining table is part of the room, the light above it is covered in dining room chandelier size.
Common mistakes
- A rug that is too small. A rug that does not reach the sofa shrinks the room. See living room rug size (in Portuguese).
- Furniture against every wall. Sometimes pulling the sofa out and using its back as a divider works better.
- Only the ceiling light. A floor lamp and a table lamp make the room look bigger at night.
If you want to skip the tape measure, Curvinha measures your room with the scan on an iPhone Pro or Pro Max (12 or later) or an iPad Pro (2020 or later), or from a photo or PDF of the floor plan. You tell it your style, pick the budget and say if you work from home; it designs the room with pieces from Brazilian stores and gathers everything in My list, with a View in store button on each piece. Frequently asked questions
How do I decorate a small living room simply?
Start with the floor plan: measure the walls, mark the door, window and walking paths, and pick a few pieces in the right size. Put the decoration on one wall, with paint and one large picture, and light the room from more than one point.
How do I decorate a small living room on a budget?
Keep what you already have, spend more on the sofa and the chair, and save on objects and plants. In a sample 15 m² room, keeping the sofa and the TV, a proposal with 8 pieces adds up to R$ 2,864.17 (prices from Oct 19, 2026).
How do I fit a sofa and a dining table in a small living room?
Use a round table, which has no corner in the way, and leave 0.75 m free around it, as Annex G of NBR 15575-1 (Brazil's building performance standard) suggests. A 4-seat table about 95 cm across is enough.
How do I set up a home office in the living room?
Put the sofa with its back to the work corner, use a desk of at least 1.20 x 0.60 m, leave 75 cm free to pull the chair back, and add a lamp just for the desk. In a 15 m² room, desk, chair and light start at R$ 2,065.59 on Oct 19, 2026.
How do I choose a sofa for a small living room?
Measure the wall and the walking paths first, prefer thin arms and visible legs, and check that it fits through the door and the elevator. There are 2-seat sofas at 1.50 m, like the Muy, from Tok&Stok.
